MELBOURNE Storm Timelapse December 29 2016

Forty-one motorists had to be rescued after becoming trapped on flooded roads in Melbourne overnight.

The SES has received more than 1,800 calls for assistance since the heavy rain hit yesterday afternoon, with Melbourne's north, north-east and south-east suffering the most flood damage.
At the height of the storm about one millimetre of rain was falling per minute, causing rivers to burst their banks.

The Bureau of Meteorology's senior forecaster Claire Yeo said rain fell in a short space of time, with up to 70 millimetres recorded in the Dandenong Ranges area in half an hour.
SES state duty officer Brad Dalgleish said crews had to evacuate a nursing home in West Meadows, in Melbourne's north, after the ceiling collapsed.

"That's actually resulted in a number of residents being relocated by the management and approximately 26 other residents were moved to different facilities within the actual nursing home," he said.

Emergency Services Minister James Merlino said support services were being offered to households and businesses affected by the downpour.

"We'll have crews on the ground and drones in the air this morning assessing the damage," he said.

"The Department of Health and Human Services, the Red Cross and local councils are providing relief and recovery services."

VicRoads has warned motorists to take care as parts of roads may still be slippery or have debris after flooding.

Rain causes landslide at Mount Hotham

Heavy rains have caused a series of landslides along the Great Alpine Road at Mount Hotham and emergency services have issued a warning to drivers to delay any unnecessary travel to the area.

The area received more than 150 millimetres of rain over the past 24 hours.

"Further landslips are possible and the community is encouraged to be aware of your surroundings," the warning said.

Drivers have been warned roads may close in the area due to dangerous conditions.

BOM: Rainband over Victoria weakening

A massive clean up continues this morning following wide-spread flash flooding across metropolitan Melbourne.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the rainband was now moving across eastern Victoria and was weakening.

Senior forecaster Beren Bradshaw said there was also some relief in sight from the humid conditions.

"We are forecasting a maximum of 28 for the Melbourne area for today and a lot of humidity is moving east along with that low pressure system," he said.
