Fire at Maple Mill

Around 70 firefighters are tackling the blaze which has been declared a 'major incident'

Firefighters are currently tackling a huge blaze at a mill in Oldham.

The crews were called to the paper mill, on Cardwell Street , at about 6am on Thursday morning.

The mill is the former headquarters of kitchen boss Vance Miller.

Around 100 people living in nearby properties have been evacuated for safety while other residents are being asked to keep windows and doors shut.

The fire service have declared the blaze a ‘major incident’ and there are currently 70 firefighters at the scene.
At the moment it is too dangerous for crews to enter the building and the team are tackling the fire from the outside of the property.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire Service said it is not thought any people were in the mill at the time.

Cardwell Street has been closed in both directions between Groby Street and Urmston Street.

Witness Stephen Rogerson, 24, said: “I could see thick black smoke and orange flames.“There was two or three loud bangs.”Video clips shared on social media show orange flames surrounding the mill and thick clouds of smoke."
